MIM Offers Teachers Free Admission during July’s Educator Appreciation Month

PHOENIX (June 21, 2024) – Throughout the month of July, the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) is thanking teachers for their dedication to students in the community during its Educator Appreciation Month. From July 1 to 31, prekindergarten through 12th-grade educators, school and district administrators, principals, registered student teachers, and homeschool educators will receive free general museum admission upon presentation of a school ID, fingerprint clearance card, or affidavit of intent.

On three Fridays—July 12, July 19, and July 26—MIM’s education department will host a brand-new series of free drop-in teacher professional development opportunities focused on music and STEM. Teachers will be able to try several interdisciplinary STEM activities in a classroom space, take home full lesson plans for K–8 students incorporating the activities, and receive guidance from a MIM education team member on the lessons and activities. Topics include modeling sound waves, fractions and ratios in music, and the relationship between coding and music.

On Saturday, July 13, and Sunday, July 14, teachers are also welcome to attend MIM’s Signature Event Experience Greece for free. This exciting Signature Event will feature live performances and fun activities showcasing the unique musical traditions of Greece.

While visiting MIM, educators can plan for field trips by exploring the museum’s galleries, which showcase instruments from every country in the world. Displays are enhanced by state-of-the-art audio and video technologies that create an engaging experience for students as they explore the world through music. MIM offers a variety of field trip options tailored to Arizona’s K–12 academic standards in a selection of subject areas. Every two-hour field trip includes an orientation video, a museum tour, free-choice learning, and music making in a hands-on gallery. MIM also offers downloadable educator resources to extend and deepen learning before and after a field trip. These free supplemental materials include hands-on activities, lesson plans, video clips and photos, and gallery activity pages.

During Educator Appreciation Month, teachers will receive a 10 percent discount on their entire purchase (excluding alcohol) at MIM’s Café Allegro and Beats Coffee Bar® as well as at the Museum Store on most non-sale merchandise (some exceptions apply). Teachers are asked to present a school ID at the time of purchase.

MIM is grateful to Desert Financial Credit Union for their sponsorship of Educator Appreciation Month. Founded in 1939 by a group of Valley educators, Desert Financial places great importance on giving back to support Arizona’s education community.

“As a music lover, I am a huge fan of the Musical Instrument Museum! MIM is such a unique and enriching experience. We are so glad to be able to honor teachers from across the Valley and give them the opportunity to enjoy everything the museum has to offer,” says Cathy Graham, executive vice president at Desert Financial Credit Union.

“Educators are our partners in bringing many different subject areas—including science, geography, and cultural appreciation—to life through music,” says Mike Silvers, MIM’s curator of education. “This July we celebrate educators and our shared love of learning.”
